A. Jay Rodgers Jr., 90, of Lancaster, formerly of Blue Ball, died Friday, May 29, 2015.
Born in Blue Ball, he was the son of the late Arthur Jay Rodgers Sr. and Mary J. (Harsh) Rodgers. He was married 44 years to the late Ellen F. Rodgers who passed away on Feb. 5, 2015.
Jay was a resident of Blue Ball for 86 years where his parents operated a store on the square. He was a 1943 graduate of New Holland High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1946. Following his military service, Jay worked at the family store until becoming Postmaster at the Blue Ball Post Office in 1960. Upon retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, he worked for Good's Furniture in New Holland.
He was a lifelong member of Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and a trustee. Jay was also involved in many civic groups, starting with the Boy Scouts of America where he was a member of Troop 48 in New Holland and later served as an adult volunteer. He was involved in the Blue Ball Lions Club, Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) in Honey Brook and New Holland AMVETS Post 40.
A 33rd degree Mason, Jay was past Master of Howell Lodge No. 405 F. & A.M. in Honey Brook, a life member of the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection 14°, and a member of the Scottish Rite in Reading. He also served as a fire policeman with the Blue Ball Fire Co., and was active with the civil defense programs in Terre Hill.
Surviving are his son, Joel A., married to Lynda (Seuss) Rodgers of Somerville, MA; three step-children, R. Thomas Fellenbaum, married to Stephanie Wilds of Old Fort, NC, Debra (Fellenbaum), married to Mark Hiester of Millersburg, and Robert, married to Linda (Pape) Fellenbaum of Lancaster; three step-grandsons; and four step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Glenn A. Rodgers of New Holland.
Preceding him in death are his sisters, Nelda P. (Rodgers) Sweigart and Marie (Rodgers) Usner.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 5, at 1 p.m. at Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church, 4833 Division Hwy., East Earl, with the Reverend Dr. Krisana Poontajak officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church at the above address.
