He enrolled at West Chester State Teachers College and graduated in 1957 with a degree in Health & Physical Education. He married Louise Ranck in 1957.

He began his thirty-year teaching career in 1957 at the former East Lampeter High School where he was Varsity Soccer coach. In 1958 East Lampeter became Conestoga Valley, where he taught in the Middle School. He moved to State College in 1959, where he taught Elementary Physical Education while pursuing a Master’s Degree at Penn State. He graduated from Penn State in 1962 and moved to New Holland to begin teaching Health and Physical Education at Garden Spot High School for the next 25 years (1962-1987). Art coached Junior High Soccer for 4 years and the Junior High Varsity Basketball team for 5 years. He started the track and field program at Garden Spot in1963 and coached the team for 5 years leading to some county and district titles. He was an assistant varsity soccer coach to Bob Weaver for 9 years, during which time the teams won 4 League Championship, 3 District III titles and 2 Inter-District Crowns. During 9 years as the Junior Varsity soccer coach, his JV teams had cumulative records of 91 wins, 13 losses and 8 ties, winning the Junior Varsity County soccer crown 5 times. He also was the announcer and ran the game clock for all Garden Spot sports home games for 25 years and was known as the “voice of Garden Spot.” Art was inducted into the Garden Spot High School Athletic Hall of Fame

After leaving the coaching ranks, Art was a dedicated high school soccer official for the next 36 Years. He also officiated College Soccer for 29 years with the Capital Area NISOA along with many local private schools. He officiated many play-off games at the league, district and state levels. For 25 years he managed the assignment of soccer officials for the Lancaster-Lebanon soccer league which involved assigning up to a thousand games per season. Art also umpired high school girls’ softball for 10 years, was a track and field official for 27 years, and umpired Slo-pitch softball for 15 years.

He retired from teaching and married Kathleen McDowell Applegate in 1987. Post retirement he worked for ERA Ski & Bike tuning and servicing ski equipment during the ski season and enjoyed working at Fox Chase Golf Course on the Greens Crew from Spring until Fall for 28 years. He loved being on the greens mower before dawn to greet the sunrise every morning, along with the various wildlife.

A longtime member of St. Stephen UCC, he was a member/song leader of the 9:15 class, sang in the choir and praise team, and was a deacon and an elder. For several years, Art traveled with Mission Outreach of St. Stephen (MOSS) to assist with rebuilding in southern states hit hard by storms and flooding. Art and his wife Kathy regularly helped with the many church community outreach programs and faithfully made 50 gallons of ham & bean soup for the New Holland Farm Show every year for the church sponsored food trailer. Art wrote poetry and sang Barbershop harmony with the Lancaster Red Rose Chorus and Family Ties quartet. He was an avid (die-hard) Penn State fan and enjoyed watching all sports. He was an accomplished fly-fisherman, traveling regularly to Yellowstone National Park to fish. Other hobbies included Winter skiing in Utah, golfing, and Fall hunting. Favorite get-aways were spending time at his mountain retreat just outside of Eagles Mere in Sullivan Co., along with trips to the beach at Ocean City, NJ. Along with being a jigsaw puzzle enthusiast, he also routinely solved the daily paper Word Jumble and Scrimmage, Cryptoquip, Suduko, and Crossword puzzles. Art and his wife Kathy loved travelling, with over twenty-five amazing adventures, both in the US and frequently in Europe with their special group of travel friends from European Backroads Tours. European River Cruises were also a favorite way to see new sights and meet new friends.

Art was especially fond of the New Holland Community and his many friends and neighbors. He found great pleasure in running into former students and athletes and seeing where their paths led them as adults. Student recollections of learning Square Dancing in gym class were always amusing and varied! Art’s sense of humor and ready wit stayed with him through the most challenging days of his illness. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Art’s memory to Hospice and Community Care or Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund. The family would also like to extend a sincere thank you to all the family, friends, and neighbors for the prayers, offers of assistance, food, and visits.
