Charles R. Martin, 84, of 1160 Division Hwy, Ephrata, passed away at Fairmount Homes on Thursday November 29th after a courageous battle against lung cancer. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pearl (Ziemer) Martin who passed away on June 26, 2002.
The strength and courage that Charlie had during the last month of his illness was a true reflection of the man that he was and how he lived his life. The cancer took his body, but not his Spirit. Even in the last days of his life, he was still able to share a smile with his family and his caregivers each time they entered his room.
Born in New Holland, he was the son of the late Jonas M. and Emma (Rutt) Martin.
He was a member of St. John’s Center United Church of Christ.
Charlie retired as a mechanic for Burkholder Quarry after 41 years of service. In his retirement, he enjoyed working in his shop, watching NASCAR races, riding his John Deere tractor and going out to eat. He will be sadly missed by his nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends and neighbors.
He is survived by three siblings: Clarence Martin, Stevens; David married to Betty Martin, Red Run; and Ruth Garrett, Centerville.
He was preceded in death by a brother Jonas Martin.
His funeral will be held on Monday, December 3 at 2:30 p.m. at Eckenroth Home for Funerals, 209 E. Main St., Terre Hill with Pastor Brad Haws officiating. Interment will be in Center Union Cemetery. A viewing will be held at Eckenroth’s on Monday from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Flowers are welcomed, but if so desired, memorials may be made to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Dr., P. O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125. Online condolences may be posted at www.groffeckenroth.com.
We would like to thank all of the truly wonderful and compassionate nurses and caregivers at Hospice & Community Care and at Fairmount Homes. Charlie appreciated their kindness and their loving care. Also, special thanks to Chaplain Paul Gehman at Fairmount Homes.
