Charles August Smith

Charles A. Smith, 94, formerly of New Holland, a resident of Landis Homes, died Tuesday, April 3, 2018.

He was married 71 years to Esther C. Tice Smith. Born in North Adams, MA he was the son of the late Charles A. and Ella Sporing Smith.

Charles graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He spent 33 years working at CNH and retired in 1985. He was a member of the New Holland United Methodist Church, the Lancaster Carving Club and the Do-Pas-O Square Dance Club. He enjoyed volunteering at the Landis Valley Museum.

Charles served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe and the Philippines.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Barbara E. wife of David Grandstaff of Oreland, and Cheryl E. wife of Rick Staherski of Lancaster; a son, Bruce C. Smith of Conestoga; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Helen Minthorn of Lake City, MI.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 11, at 10:30 A.M. at the West Bethany Chapel at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, PA. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the service. Interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Smith’s memory may be made to the Caring Fund at Landis Homes.
