Charlotte B. Maclay, 88, of New Holland, died Friday, October 10, 2014 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Bakerton, Cambria County, Pa., daughter of the late Rev. Herbert Plank Beam and the late Katharine (Patterson) Beam.
Graduated from Juniata College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and from Millersville University, with a master of education degree.
Taught remedial reading for a number of years in the Pequea Valley School District. Earlier, had privately tutored pupils with reading problems. Retired in 1989.
Following retirement, she joined her husband in their motor-home travels throughout North America for a number of years.
Long active in Church work, she taught Sunday school in the primary department of New Holland United Methodist Church for many years. Had chaired the Worship Committee and the Outreach Committee of her church. Member of the Administrative Council, which she served as secretary. She sang in the church choir and was a program participant in community and district church events.
She also gave freely of her time and energy with the New Holland Food Bank for many years. After retiring from teaching, she assisted with the reading program in New Holland, Elementary School. She was a member of the New Holland Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband, Harry; three sons, Douglas, married to Tonya (Lyons) Maclay of Stroudsburg, Pa., Alan, married to Phyllis (Supplee) Maclay of Aiken, SC, and David, married to Julia (Loewen) Maclay of New Holland; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 11 am at Garden Spot Village Chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, with the Reverend Ray Voran officiating. Interment will be in the Machpelah Presbyterian Cemetery in Belleville on Wed. at 4 pm. Viewing will be held on Wed. at Garden Spot Village from 10-11 am.
