Douglas Jay Beard, 79, of Morgantown, PA, passed away peacefully March 31, 2013, at home.
Born in Spring City, Oct. 25, 1933, he was the son of the late Mahlon Wilmer and Grace (Latshaw) Beard. He served in the U.S. Army.
He was married to the former Olivia (Starritt) who passed away in 1997.
They had two daughters, Kathleen, married to Rick Santos, Azusa, CA, and Virginia, married to Randall MacNeill, Elverson. Grandchildren are Dori and Gwen Santos and Randall MacNeill, Jr., and one great grandchild Hailey.
In 1999, Doug married Mary Lois (Stoltzfus) and gained three more children and their spouses, Kevin (Elaine) Stoltzfus, Karen (Bob) Horning and Kendra (Bob) Siemers; four grandchildren, James & Elizabeth Stoltzfus, Maray & Joe Zimmerman, Melissa & Caleb Smoker and Mattie Horning; and four great grandchildren, Jack, Benjamin & Lucianne Stoltzfus and Myles Zimmerman.
He is also survived by a brother, Richard (Shirley) Beard, a sister Reda (John) Sypherd, a sister-in-law Fay Beard and a brother-in-law William Starritt.
He was preceded in death by six siblings: Ruth, Grace, Jane, Lois, Wilmer and Doris.
He was a member of Grace and Truth Fellowship of Morgantown where he served as Trustee.
He worked at Firestone, had an Antique Shop and was a self-employed carpenter.
After moving to Los Angeles, CA, in 1977, he joined N.C. Systems, and eventually moved with the company to Amarillo, TX. Upon retirement, he returned to Penna.
Doug enjoyed volunteering at the Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe, playing cards and spending time at the mountains with his friends.
He was known for his baking, his great sense of humor and was loved by many.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 3, at 7:00 p.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main Street, Morgantown, PA, with visitation from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. as well as after the service. Private interment will be at the convenience of the family. Eckenroth Home for Funerals in charge of arrangements.
