Dr. Robert P.
Johnson
April 5, 1944 – April 28, 2026
Dr. Robert P. Johnson MD, 82, of New Holland, passed away on April 28, 2026, at Hospice and Community Care, Mt. Joy, surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born in Harrisburg, PA, to his late parents, Robert G. and Anne M. (O’Neill) Johnson. His beloved wife, Bernadette C. (Mickey) Johnson, passed away on April 12, 2015.
Robert was a graduate of LaSalle University and the Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. He served as a physician and Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy aboard the USS Milwaukee. He then completed his residency in Family Medicine at Lancaster General Hospital. Dr. Johnson went on to co-found the New Holland Family Health Center, serving generations of families for four decades. He also previously served as the Chairman of LGH Family and Community Medicine and the President of the Medical and Dental Staff at Lancaster General Hospital, in addition to serving on numerous other medical and community boards.
As Robert wrote to his family in response to a prompt about how he would like to be remembered, “I would like to be remembered as a good person, someone who loved his family. As someone who loved Bernie deeply, and misses her to this day. As a good father and husband. As a good physician who tried his best to help people. As an educated person who valued lifelong learning. As someone who loved to travel. As someone who liked museums. As someone whose favorite artists were the Impressionists. As someone who was drawn to reading. As someone who enjoyed good food and drink, especially when accompanied by friends and family. As someone who was intrigued by Irish culture, music, and history. As someone who enjoyed cooking, fishing, gambling, sports (especially football and baseball), Philadelphia sports most of all, and brewing. As someone who led by example. As someone who liked animals. As someone who was generous. As someone who was proud of his military service.” He can be assured that he will be remembered for all these things and more.
Robert is survived by his children, Nancy J. Walder and her husband, Daniel J., of Newark, DE; Michael A. Hoober of New Holland; Robert C. Johnson and his wife, Amy, of Irvine, CA; Kathleen M. Johnson and her husband, Steve Vierling, of Denver, CO; Emily E. Hoober and her husband, Erik Steinbach, of State College; and Eugene G. Johnson and his wife, Emily Woodhouse, of Lancaster. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren: Cassidy Vierling, Charlotte Walder, Thomas Walder, Nola Johnson, Violet Vierling, Lilliana Steinbach, and Parker Hoober. He is also survived by his brother, Steven Johnson, and his wife, Patricia.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, Robert was predeceased by his brothers, Donald E. Johnson and Michael Johnson.
