Elmer F. Wissinger, 81, of 5352 South View Drive, New Holland, died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Denver Nursing Home, Denver, PA.
Born in Johnstown, he was the son of the late Hadley and Bessie (Stufft) Wissinger. He was married 57 years to Leanore (Varner) Wissinger.
Elmer worked as a self employed carpenter and a barber for 32 years. Later he worked for Formica Kitchen Designers in Johnstown.
He was a member of the former First Evangelical Congregational Church on Goldie Street in Johnstown where he served as Steward, Trustee, and Superintendent. During the Korean Conflict he served in the US Army and was a former member of the American Legion Post 551 in St. Michael, PA.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Alan, married to Anita (Detwiler) Wissinger of New Holland, and Mark, married to Kathy (Maness) Wissinger of Germantown, MD; four granddaughters, Caitlyn, Kristin, Anne, and Brandi; a sister, Florence Wissinger of Salix, PA; and a brother, Charles Wissinger of Texas.
Preceding him in death are three sisters, Dorothy McAchren, Barbara Marie Wissinger, and Betty Felix.
There will be no viewing and a memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Elmer at Hopewell Christian Fellowship, 2286 Hopewell Road, Elverson, PA on June 24 at 4:00 pm. From 3:00 to 4:00 prior to the service, the family will receive friends. A light meal will be served after the service in the church’s fellowship room. Interment will be in the Richland Cemetery, Richland, PA. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603.
