Elton Horning, 82, formerly of Morgantown, PA passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2013 in hospice care at Lancaster Regional Hospital with his family at his side. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his children Rodney Horning husband of Janie (Reiff) New Holland,PA, Marilyn Gehman companion of Anthony (Howard) Reinholds,PA and Michael Horning husband of Glenda (Coates) Birdsboro, PA and his grandchildren, Nikki Stern, Sara Newton, Kylie Lombardo, Gabriel Horning, Chelsea Bulut, Anthony Howard, Brian Horning, Brook Horning and eight great grandchildren.
He was the husband of the late Linda K. Petersheim, who passed away on May 6, 1994.
Elton attended Conestoga Mennonite Church, Morgantown, PA.
Born in Brecknock Twp., he was the son of Alvin Bowman Horning and Sarah Martin Horning and is survived by siblings: Eleanor, wife of Richard Kauffman Mt. Joy, PA, Florence Stoltzfus Atglen, PA, Helen wife of Nelson Lehman Lancaster, PA, Doris wife of Dale Stoltzfus, Lititz, PA, Alvin B. Horning, Jr. husband of Roberta (Sheeler) Morgantown, PA, Janet wife of Ken Hartzler, Manheim, PA, Eileen Byler, Akron, PA, and Philip M. Horning husband of Melissa (Gill) New Holland, PA. He was pre-deceased by his brothers Melvin Horning, Leonard Horning, and Kenneth Horning, and his sister Mildred Mast. He loved being part of a large family.
A man with charisma, we will always remember
his sense of humor, self taught piano playing, positive attitude, his generosity and the compliments that made us all feel special. He lived the American Dream. As a young man, Elton worked at Sauder Feed Mill, and on potato farms in the area. He drove truck for Gotwals Bros. and Chemical Leaman Tank Lines. In the 1960’s he got his auctioneer’s license, held household auctions and sold livestock. He began selling Real Estate with Hershey Farm Agency in Harleysville, PA and eventually started his own Real Estate business, Horning Farm Agency in Morgantown, in 1972. He loved the farms and farm families in Lancaster and Berks Counties and enjoyed his part in the continuum of our farming heritage. In later years he served as a Director for Blue Ball National Bank. He was a longtime member of Buck Hollow Hunting Club. In retirement he raised steers, enjoyed gardening, watching the stock market and doing projects with his family and friends.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown with Pastor Bob Petersheim officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Elverson. Viewings will be held at the church on Friday from 6 – 8 p.m. and Saturday from Noon – 2 p.m. If desired, memorials may be sent to the National Kidney Association, 111 S Independence Mall E Ste 411,
