Galen E. Sweigart Sr., 87, of Gordonville, passed away on February 25, 2025 at his residence.
Born in Bird in Hand, he was the son of the late Curtis F. and Minnie (Englert) Sweigart.
He was the husband of the late Elsie Mae (Weller) Sweigart, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage until the time of her passing on June 2, 2020.
Prior to retirement he had worked as a blacksmith and then for the former Sperry New Holland for over 20 years as a paint sprayer. After retirement, he was an Amish taxi driver. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed traveling to the family cabin in Lycoming County and loved to play and coach fastpitch softball, playing until he was 75 years old. He had played his last game when he was 80 years old and was inducted into the Tricounty softball hall of fame. He started his mornings with his friends at The White Horse Luncheonette. For the last 35 years, Galen had family dinners at their home every Sunday evening, where he would cook for all of them.
Galen is survived by his children: Galen E., Jr. “Gig” Sweigart, New Holland, Karen E. married to Steve Diener, Bird-in-Hand, Brian K. “Butchie” married to Deborah Sweigart, New Holland, Cheryl A. married to Clint Houck, New Holland, and Darryl E. “Whitey” married to Beth Sweigart, New Holland, grandchildren: Courtney Carlson, Casey married to Jeremy Horning, Corey Houck, Jeremy Houck husband of Ashley and Joshua Houck, Wyatt Sweigart, Ashley Fowler wife of Ethan, Kristen Stauffer wife of Jared, and Lindsey Finkey wife of Drew and great-grandchildren: Willow and Piper Carlson, Reagan and Brynlee Horning, Paisley Fowler, Owen Lintner and Logan Houck. Also surviving are his siblings: Myra Harsh, Jean Mowrer and John Sweigart.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings: Curtis Sweigart, Norma Buzzard, Alverta Diem, Fay Gehman, Genevieve Sweigart and Dorothy Binkley.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Ranck’s United Methodist Church, 700 Ranck Road, New Holland PA 17557, please dress casually. Interment in the adjoining church cemetery will be immediately following the service with a time of visitation following.
