Harold C. Good

Harold Carpenter Good, 96, a metal craftsman, storyteller, and dedicated alumnus of Milton Hershey School, died May 18, 2015 at St. Anne’s Retirement Home in Columbia. He was a long-time resident of Elizabethtown.

Mr. Good was born September 10, 1918 in Leacock to Clarence and Annie (Carpenter) Good.

He graduated from the Hershey Industrial School, now Milton Hershey School, in 1936. After serving in Europe in the Army Air Corp during World War II, he returned to MHS as a sheet-metal shop teacher. He commenced what would be a 40-year career, in which he left a lasting impression on generations of students. At his retirement in 1986, school organizers distributed Mr. Goodbars in honor of Mr. Good to all in attendance. He himself remained a dedicated MHS alumnus all his life, corresponding with far-flung classmates, sharing his knowledge of the school’s history, and attending alumni events, most recently with his grandson.

Mr. Good was an accomplished athlete. At the Hershey Industrial School, he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball, and family and friends remember him as a strong swimmer and formidable tennis opponent. He was also an avid surf fisherman, vegetable gardener, Bridge player, crossword-puzzle solver, and reader, who loved to recite poetry from memory to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Holland, where he had served on the vestry. Always generous of spirit, Mr. Good approached life with honesty and cheer, earning him the respect and admiration of many. He loved music (especially show tunes), conversation, and sharing a good meal with his family and friends. He always had a story to tell.

He is predeceased by his wife, Lillie Diller Good, to whom he was married for 54 years when she died in 1994, and by his three siblings, Mildred Schweitzer, Lester Good, and Evelyn Hartranft.

He is survived by his three children, Judy (Thomas) Garman of Lancaster; Harold (Penny) Good, Jr. of Corolla, NC; and Nancy (Stephen) Kachniasz of Elizabethtown; and by two grandchildren, Thomas Garman, Jr. and Julie Kachniasz (Christopher Warren). In his last years, he reveled in his three young great-grandchildren, Reagan Garman-Anderson and Gabriel and Annabel Warren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 5 at 11 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland. Mr. Good’s nephew, the Reverend John Schweitzer, will officiate. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Viewing will be held on Thursday, June 4 from 6 to 8 PM at the Groff-High Funeral Home, 145 W.
