Hervey M. Painter of Garden Spot Village, New Holland, PA passed away at home on January 26, 2026, at the age of 101.
Hervey was born on a farm in Pine Swamp, Chester Co., PA near Elverson, on November 9, 1924, the fifth of twelve children to William M. and Grace McCord Painter. His adolescent years were spent in Warwick Township (Chester County). He graduated from Warwick High School Class in 1942 as both Valedictorian and Class President. He also received 9 varsity letters in baseball, basketball and soccer throughout high school.
Hervey honorably served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated from Penn State University in 1949 as an honor student with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He was a member of honorary scholastic societies Gamma Sigma Delta and Phi Kappa Phi.
Hervey spent the early part of his career in the agriculture field managing the Westtown School Farm and Milk Plant in Chester County. Also, teaching Veterans in the Farm Management and Dairy Science Agriculture GI Program. During this time he served as an officer of many Chester County and state agriculture organizations.
In 1959 Hevey began a 37 year career in the real estate field as a partner in Porter & Painter Realtors with the main office in Exton, Chester County. Specializing in farm sales, land sales, and land development with the largest project being 300 acres adjacent to Whitford Country Club. During his real estate career he served many years on the Chester County Realtors Association Board of Directors and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Real Estate Appraisers Association.
Hervey was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester where he served as a trustee. He was a member of Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church in East Earl and was currently attending The Community Church at Garden Spot Village. He was a long time member of the Rotary Club of Downingtown, West Chester Golf & Country Club, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows as well as a Masonic member of the Mt. Pickering Lodge of Upper Uwchlan Township, Chester County.
Hervey was preceded in death by his parents Grace and William Painter, infant sister Gracie, sisters Ada Philips, Virginia Smith of Chester County, PA, sister Minnie Kemp of Berks, Co., sister Irene Shields of New Jersey, brothers Robert Painter of Pottstown, Hunter Painter of Ohio, Gross Painter of Chester Co., and Fred Painter of Chester Co.
Hervey is survived by his beloved wife Mary T. Painter nee Pearson, originally of Michigan. Hervey and Mary were married in June of 1986 in West Chester, PA. In November of 2008 they moved from their home in Guthriesville to Garden Spot Village, Lancaster County. He is survived by step-son Jerry Marleau, his wife Christina of New Braunfels, TX and step-daughter Linda Zupan, her husband Dewey of Wilsall, MT. Hervey (aka Grandpoppy) also leaves behind his 3 grandchildren Brian, Megan, and Michael and their families, including 4 great-grandchildren.
Hervey is also survived by his sister Narrie Herr of Maryland, and brother Jesse Painter of Chester Co., as well as 15 nieces and nephews and 33 great-nieces and nephews from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Colorado, Oregon, Paris, France and Wales, UK.
Honorary pall bearers are: Jesse Painter, Jay Painter, Dan Painter, Jerry Marleau, Brian Marleau and Michael Marleau
Services will be held at The Chapel at Garden Spot Village on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 6:00 PM followed by refreshments at The Village Park at Garden Spot Village. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Contributions in Hervey’s memory may be made to Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund, 433 Kinzer Ave., New Holland, PA 17557. The Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland, is in charge of arrangements.
