Hubert Hermann Wilhelm Kranich, 88, of Fairmount Homes went to heaven with Lord Jesus on Thursday, December 28 after surrendering to a recent diagnosis of lymphoma. His body and soul are now perfect, pain-free, and back to work landscaping in the beautiful gardens of heaven.
Hubert was born in Berlin, Germany on March 6, 1935. After a childhood impacted significantly by World War II, he apprenticed as a pastry chef at the age of 14 and then studied hotel and restaurant management in the German Alps. He lived in Paris, London, and Canada before coming to the US in 1961 and settling in Lancaster County after receiving a job offer from Howard Johnson’s. It was there that he met his wife of 59 years, Marion Musser Kranich.
Mr. K., as he is known by many, owned People’s Restaurant in New Holland for 28 years. His incredible immigrant work ethic, thrift, and value for education provided for his children to attend college, something he did not have the opportunity to do. After retirement, he volunteered doing gardening and landscaping work for his home church, Pine Grove Church of Bowmansville (where he attended for 51 years), and for the Material Resources Center (MRC) of the Mennonite Central Committee.
He will be remembered greatly for his multi-faceted generosity to many Christian ministries (Pine Grove Church, Cru, MRC, Christian Appalachian Project), organizations (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Running Strong), and individuals. He especially loved to give his used cars away for $1 to those who needed them. He was a little unusual, and a lot stubborn, but we loved him.
He leaves behind his wife, Marion Kranich; his son Karl (Liesl) Kranich and grandchild James; his daughter, Christiana Kranich; and several nieces and a nephew in Germany: Martha Höltschl, Ute Schoberth, Michael Uhlig, and Elke Schneider-Wich. He is preceded in death by his parents Wilhelm and Martha Kranich; brothers Dieter and Aribert Kranich; sister Christiane Uhlig and niece Kirsten Uhlig.
We are especially thankful for the helpful and compassionate care provided by the staff at Fairmount Homes and at Hospice and Community Care over the last 3 weeks.
To honor his memory, the family requests that donations be made “In memory of Hubert Kranich” to Pine Grove Church, PO Box 573, Bowmansville, PA 17507. A memorial service is planned for the spring of 2024.
Groff High Funeral Home in New Holland is entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
