Irma Caroline Hillard Gehman, a resident of Garden Spot Village in New Holland, passed away on November 3. Born in Gap, PA, she was one of eight children of Walter and Rebecca Smith Hillard.
Irma received a diploma from Salisbury Township High School and graduated from Honey Brook High School in 1941. She married Charles LeRoy (Roy) Gehman of Churchtown, PA, in 1944 and moved to New Holland. She managed the senior high cafeteria at Garden Spot High School. During the summers, she worked in the snack bar at New Holland Park. Irma’s passions were cooking and sewing. Following her retirement, she worked part-time making Amish dolls and other crafts for the Lill-Boden Shop at Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse, PA.
Irma was a lifelong member of Pequea Presbyterian Church, were she was a member of the women’s circle. Surviving are her daughter Sheree Fleming of Sterling, VA; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband Charles LeRoy Gehman; brothers Clair, Ralph, Leon, and Lloyd Hillard; sisters Edna and Reba Hillard and Marguerite Kurtz; and daughter Carolyn Gehman Rudy of Bainbridge Island, WA.
A viewing will be held at Groff-High-Eckenroth Funeral Home, 145 West Main Street, New Holland, on Tuesday, November 5 from 6:30-8 pm. A viewing will also be held on Wednesday, November 6 from 10 – 11 am at Garden Spot Village Chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland with her funeral following at 11 am. Interment will follow in Pequea Presbyterian Cemetery, Gap, PA. Online condolences may be posted at www.groffeckenroth.com.
