J. Nelson Horst, 76, of Lancaster, formerly of New Holland, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, on November 1, 2024 after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Norma (Barge) Horst. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in August. Nelson was the son of the late Abram S. Horst, Sr. and Ruth (Shultz) Horst.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, and appreciated the Godly and Biblical messages.
Nelson was employed with the Horst Group and served as President and General Manager of Horst Supply Company. During this time, he served on the board of Eastern Building Materials Dealers Association and was chairman of their business development committee. He also served on the board of directors of The Better Business Bureau. He later worked with Hostetter Realty and also John Sauder Auto Co. as Special Assignment Consultant.
Nelson loved spending time with his children and grandchildren over the years, especially family vacation weeks at the beach. He was a lifelong Phillies fan, through the good and the bad years. He enjoyed listening to music (oldies), cars (50’s & 60’s), NASCAR races, Penn State football and the Eagles.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Norma, are two sons: Jeffrey N. husband of Alicia (Godfrey) Horst and Clifford R. husband of Roselle (Groff) Horst, both of Lancaster. Five grandchildren: Joel N. husband of McKayla (Naimen), Justin N. husband of Anna (Wagner), Ella, Truman, and Nolan, and one Great-granddaughter Araya. Siblings: Joyce (Lloyd) Kreider, Clyde W. (Barbara) Horst, Reba (Fred) Umble. He was predeceased by a brother Abram S. Horst, Jr. and his wife Marian, and a brother-in-law Lloyd Kreider.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Nelson’s Celebration of Life Service at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, PA, on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. The family will greet friends at the church from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in New Holland Mennonite Cemetery. At Nelson’s request, in lieu of flowers, those desiring may send contributions in Nelson’s memory to “The Clinic for Special Children”, 20 Community Lane, Gordonville, PA 17529, in honor of his special needs grandson, Nolan Horst.
