James Allen Good, 90, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2014 at Fairmount Retirement Homes in Ephrata, where he resided since 2005. He was born May 4, 1923 in Spring City, PA to the late Allen H and Hannah (Gross) Good. On April 6, 1947, he married Edna Mae (Mast) Good, who preceded him in death on Dec. 28, 2012. Surviving are two daughters: Catherine (Larry) Nafziger, Goshen, IN and Christine (Edward) Shenk, Hamburg, PA. Also two sons: Harold (Caryle Shatto) Good of Kunming, China and Ethan (Joy Detweiler) Good of Green Lane, PA. A daughter, Esther Lorraine Savage preceded him in death. Survivors include 10 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters: Barbara Kurtz, and Pauline Good; and two brothers Claude Good and Ernest Good. He was preceded in death by his two sisters: Elizabeth Horst and Catherine Kurtz; and two brothers: Webster Good and Lawrence Good.
Even though he received only an 8th grade education, his desire to learn was satisfied by avidly reading. He was an ingenious man who invented and built many machines and household items. As an accomplished baker, he developed his own recipe for making a mix for his famous shoo-fly pies. He manufactured, packaged and marketed Good's Shoo-fly Pie Mix, which is still made today. He was known for his delicious cheesecakes which were greatly missed at family gatherings when he could no longer bake them.
In his latest career his invention was “The Boss" log splitter, which he marketed and sold through mail-order. Playing games with his family was a favorite. His good sense of humor, and story telling, and his love of singing was evident even to his last few days. He traveled with his wife to visit their son and daughter-in-law on the mission field in Indonesia and Thailand, as well as his brother in Mexico. James was a long time member of Oley Mennonite Church, and in his last years, at Conestoga Mennonite Church.
The memorial service will be held Saturday April 12, 2014 at 12:00PM, with a visiting time beginning at 10:30 AM at Oley Valley Mennonite Church, Oley, PA, with Karl Glick presiding. A separate, private burial will take place at the church's cemetery.
