Jay H. Shirk

Jay H. Shirk, 83, of 327 S. Railroad Ave., New Holland died Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Hickory House, Honey Brook. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winona M. (Rock) Shirk in 2012.

Born in New Holland, he was the son of the late Peter N. and Joanna (Hoover) Shirk.

He formerly worked at Sensenig Appliances and Wickes Lumber but retired from Lancaster County Vo-Tech (LCCTC) – Brownstown in 1997 after 17 years.

He was an active member of Salem (Heller’s) Evangelical Reformed Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, and served on the Consistory, and was currently on the Property Committee.

He worked with New Holland Ambulance Association for 17 years, was a former member of the Jaycees, and enjoyed bowling and golf. He loved photography, including developing his own photos.

Surviving are four children: Larry J. married to Judi (Bath) Shirk, New Holland; Deb married to Ragen Burns, New Holland; Russ S. married to Cindy (Lefever) Shirk, Lancaster; David L. Shirk, Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren: Emily L. Shirk, Ben H. Shirk, Jarred C. Burns, Justin M. Burns, Katelyn M. Burns and two great granddaughters: Harper V. Burns and Emmersen Grace Burns; and six siblings: Walter Shirk, Landis Homes; Evelyn Longenecker, Lititz; Frank Shirk, Leola; James H. “Bud” Shirk, Lancaster; Warren Shirk, New Holland and Paul Shirk, Akron.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Shirk and three brothers Raymond, Allen, and Ernest Shirk.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Salem (Heller’s) Evangelical Reformed Church with Pastor Bruce Tully officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Kindly omit flowers.
