Julia N. Shirk, 90, of Oatfield Drive, Denver, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at Ephrata Manor following a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband William Blaine Shirk in 1996.
Born in Terre Hill, she was the daughter of the late Ivan and Mate (Clime) Newpher.
She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Terre Hill, and of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lititz.
A graduate of Terre Hill High School and a former school teacher, she later worked at Cinderella Knitting Mills. She enjoyed baking, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching Penn State Football and golf.
Surviving are her children, Alice A. Palmer of York, and John W. Shirk of Perryville, MD, four grandchildren: Jennifer Hoffman, Heather Weaver, Kathryn Zwally and Hallie Palmer; and five great grandchildren: Taylor, Madison, Ashlyn, Bradyn and Kellan. Also suriviving are her sisters, Allegra Ansel and Elsie Weinhold, both of Terre Hill, and a brother Harold Newpher of Carson City, NV.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Woodrow and James Newpher and sister Pat Parmer.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Eckenroth Home for Funerals, 209 E. Main St., Terre Hill, PA, with the Rev. Dennis Trout officiating. Interment will be in the Terre Hill Cemetery. A time of viewing will be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Online condolences may be posted to our website www.groffeckenroth.com.
