Lee R. Miller, May 16, 2012, Philadelphia, PA - Born in New Holland, he was the son of the late Helen Miller. He was married 48 years on October 5 to Dee (Grutski) Miller after a courtship of six years. He is also survived by Dee’s sister, Rose Lopatin.
Lee graduated in 1951 from New Holland High School where he was valedictorian of his graduation commencements. He had many talents, such as portraying Charlie Chaplin in his school play. Lee was granted a senatorial scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania where he completed his undergraduate program with a B.A. degree.
He retired from Temple University as administrative assistant to the Department Chair in the College of Education having served 28 years. During his term at Temple, Lee earned his Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in Education.
Prior to that, he worked in research labs at the University of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann Hospital.
Lee was a charter member of Omicron Tau Theta at Temple University.
Among his many talents, he was a self-taught photographer.
During the National Conference for the American Psychoanalysis Association, Lee had a photographic exhibit of Sigmund Freud’s life events. Having visited significant places in Europe, Czechoslovakia, and Auschwitz, Poland, five of his photographs were published in Anna Freud’s biography of her father.
The New York Times acknowledged Lee Miller, an unknown photographer from Philadelphia, as the picture being the most interesting and significant in the book.
Lee was an active, avid member of the Sons of the Desert, an international organization (Laurel & Hardy fans club). He served on the board of the Two Tars Tent, for many years in Phila.
Lee enjoyed listening to the classical music station and WRTI, Temple, contributing to their fund.
He spoke several languages, including French and Polish, and was able to converse in Slavic languages. Lee earned a German language certificate at the University in Hamburg, Germany.
Lee is loved by the many friends and many others that he encountered in his lifetime.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 21 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 150 Water St., New Holland, PA 17557 with the Rev. John D. Schmalhofer officiating. Interment will be in the Zeltenreich Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Monday at the Groff-High Funeral Home, 145 W. Main St., New Holland from 9 -10 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Building Fund, address above.
