Lester W. Gehman, 94, of Fairmount Homes, formerly of Bowmansville and New Holland, died Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Ephrata Community Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Brecknock Twp., Lancaster County, he was the son of the late Silas G. and Katie (Weber) Gehman. He was married 23 years on April 14 to Esther Mae (Weinhold) Good Gehman. His first wife, Esther W. (Martin) Gehman, died in 1989.
Lester retired in 1990 after 32 years as a truck driver for Adamstown Equipment. He worked in the greenhouse business with his brother-in-law for many years, and also drove school bus for Gehman’s Mennonite School. Later he worked part time for Sunline Trailer Company.
He was a lifelong member of Gehman’s Mennonite Church where he formerly served as secretary and treasurer. He enjoyed hunting and woodworking and was a licensed Ham Radio operator. During WWII he served 42 months with the Civilian Public Service in Luray, VA and OH.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Mary Lynn, married to John H. Miller, Jr. of New Holland; two sons, Lowell D., married to Joyce (Good) Gehman of Wernersville, and Nelson D., married to Dianne (Weber) Gehman of Mohnton; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; six step children, Ray H., married to Doris (Hess) Good of Akron, Glen L., married to Ruth (Betz) Good of Landisville, Joyce Mohn of Lancaster, Janet, married to Dennis Sauder of Clearfield, Jay, married to Debra (Eberly) Good of Denver, and Joan Swayze of Akron; 17 step grandchildren; and 33 step great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are 2 great grandsons; 2 step great grandchildren; a sister, Mamie Musser; and a brother, Howard Gehman.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 25 at 10 am at the Gehman’s Mennonite Church, 127 Witmer Road, Adamstown with the Rev. Phil Horning, Retired Bishop Irvin L. Martin, and the Rev. Glen D. Martin officiating. Viewing will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 pm at Fairmount Homes Wheat Ridge Chapel, 333 Wheat Ridge Dr., Ephrata and on Thursday from 9-10 am at Gehman’s Mennonite Church. Kindly omit flowers.
