Margaret Lowell Hartman, 105, of 99 Bethany Road, Ephrata, died Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Ephrata Manor. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Elizabeth (Weaver) Lowell. She was the wife of Hugh D. Hartman who passed away in 1999 after 70 years of marriage. She was a Victory Girl volunteer in the 1st World War. She was a graduate of the Sacred Heart Academy in Lancaster and later attended Marywood College in Scranton. In her early years she worked at the family store, Lowells Leather Goods, in Lancaster, and spent many years in New York State, especially Cobleskill and later in Cooperstown where she was very active in Girl Scouting and volunteering in local hospitals. Margaret was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and a devotee of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Irons of New Holland, Margaret Becker of East Hampton, CT, and Barbara, married to William F. Stuve of Chesterland, OH. She is loved and admired by 13 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death is a daughter, Roberta Slover; a brother, John W. Lowell, II; and four sisters, Josephine Hutchinson, Christine Wolf, Marian Lanshe, and Elizabeth Eaby. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 11 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 150 Water St., New Holland, PA 17557 with Fr. John Schmalhofer as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Marys Cemetery in Lancaster. A visitation will be held on Wednesday at the Church from 10-11 am. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (address above) or to Ephrata Manor Benevolent Fund, 99 Bethany Road, Ephrata, PA 17522.
