Margo Madden, formerly of Hazelton and York, PA, died peacefully Monday morning, surrounded by her family.
She was born on July 13, 1939, to E. Grant and Edith Newcomer in Williamsport, PA.
She attended a one-room schoolhouse in English Center, PA, graduated from Wellsboro High School and Barnard College, and earned her master's degree at NYU. She worked as a copywriter for several New York publishers, at public information for Queens College, and at the York Dispatch as a reporter and editor until an accident severely limited her mobility. Rather than give up, she wrote a column for the Dispatch, dealing with disability issues, and became active in the local disability movement. Moving to Hazleton, she continued, and chaired the board of the Anthracite Center for Independent Living. She also volunteered for the local Art League and Catholic Social Services.
She loved being around people, her cats, other species, cooking, a variety of outdoor activities, and, most importantly, her friends and family.
She is survived by her son, Will (partner, Ruth Williams), her daughter, Betsy (husband, Steve Orsborn), and her husband, John. She also leaves behind her sister, Nan Reiley, sisters-in-law, Meg and Connie Madden, and nephews.
A celebration of her life will take place from 1 to 4 pm on Saturday, March 16 with remembrances from 2 to 2:30 at 600 Linden Drive, New Holland, PA 17557.
Groff High Funeral Home is entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
