Martha M. Gehman

Martha M. Gehman, 100, formerly of New Holland, died Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Fairmount Homes.

Born in Brecknock Twp., Lancaster Co., she was the daughter of the late Abraham L. and Katherine (Musser) Gehman.

Martha was a domestic worker but had also worked at the Mennonite Home, the former Graybill’s Mill, Bareville as a bookkeeper, the former Trimmer’s Store, New Holland, and Lancaster Mennonite School.

She was a member of Groffdale Mennonite Church, a past-president of the sewing circle, and a Sunday School teacher at Palo Alto for more than 15 years. She also volunteered for Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000.

Missions was an important part of Martha’s life. She supported missionaries through small projects of her own such as a garden plot, growing flowers or raising ducks, all which were sold to help fund missions.

Surviving are two half-siblings: Orpha Gehman, Denver and Jesse married to Joanne Gehman, Ephrata; eight nieces and nephews: Martha married to John Auker, Mary married to Richard Brubaker, Margaret married to Bill Gall, Martin married to Jackie Weaver, Lloyd married to June Weaver, Ruth Ann married to Kenneth Freed, Scott married to Amy Gehman, and Jennifer married to Stephen Lusk.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Weaver, in 2008.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Fairmount Homes Wheat Ridge Chapel with Glenn Hershey, Paul Gehman, and Kenneth Freed officiating. Interment will be in Bowmansville Mennonite Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the Chapel on Monday from Noon until the time of service.
