Mary Catherine Hall Bushong

My mother Mary was released into heaven after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease on Friday the 13th. The luckiest day for her. We mourn her loss of life from this disease although she had a full, rich, challenging life before the disease started. Mom was born and raised in Washington DC, to loving parents. Her father Clyde Hall was a clarinet player in the United States Marine band, playing for four consecutive presidents during the years of 1941 to 1958, retiring in 1958 and moving to Lancaster County to become an antique dealer. Her mother Bernice Hall Thompson a loving, gracious, southern gal from North Carolina who was an RN and of Cherokee descent. She has one surviving brother Donald Winston Hall of Conestoga, PA. She had one son Scott Bushong, who entered into rest in 2019 after a lifetime battle with mental illness. She is survived by her daughter Bonnie Johnson of Landisville, and her grandsons Laine Thomas Johnson of Lancaster and Corey Rhea Johnson of Lititz and a beautiful great-granddaughter Laila. Mom was a mental health advocate, a passionate animal lover, and a professional career woman which included retiring with the county of Lancaster Pennsylvania as a contract and grants administrator for the planning commission. She also had leadership roles in the tool industry working with Black & Decker, DeWalt, and Danaher Tool Group. Traveling within the United States, visiting different territories and representing government contracts. She was a graduate of East Lampeter High in 1958 although she also attended Anacostia High in Washington DC. She attended Western Carolina University and her major was business administration. She also attended F& M College and Millersville University studying business, computers and French. She had a lifelong passion for history and antiques. She was also an active member of the Lancaster ski club for over 25 years, serving on the board and leading two major trips. The membership afforded her the opportunity to travel internationally and nationally to many major ski resorts. Her other interests included an enthusiasm for fitness, tennis, golf, Qigong, and ballroom dancing. She spent a considerable amount of time devoted to community service such as the Red Cross volunteer chair of community and youth services recruitment and the Lancaster historical society as volunteer recruitment chairperson. She was passionate about her life and her friendships and she will be truly missed. A private Cherokee influenced service and burial was held on Monday, May 16, 2022 for family. To all the caregivers at the Mennonite Home, Country Meadows and Magnolias of Lancaster, thank you for caring for my mother and may God Bless all of you.
