Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Mentzer Martin Lowry, 90, of New Holland, Pennsylvania, went to be with her Lord and Savior, on March 17, 2026.

Born to Ellis Kling Mentzer and Ruth Emma Ranck on October 18,1935, Mary lived most of her life on farms south of New Holland. She graduated from Upper Leacock High School in 1953 and was an active member of New Holland 4-H Club. She later became a leader in the Pequea Valley 4-H Sewing Club and was honored in 1993 for 25 years of service. An avid gardener, Mary participated in many years of garden tours and delighted Lancaster County travelers with her spectacular perennial beds. She worked in the family dairy, waitressed at Plain and Fancy Restaurant and drove bus for Eastern Lancaster County School District. She served as church pianist and organist for Ranck's United Methodist, Zeltenreich Reformed, Grace Brethren and Evangelical United Methodist. Mary was fascinated by history. She compiled genealogies of her eight family lines and loved volunteering as accession secretary for New Holland Area Historical Society.

Mary’s first husband James Zeiset Martin passed away on October 21,1967 and her second husband Gene Allen Lowry passed away on January 3, 2026.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, her husbands, her brother Roy Ranck Mentzer and her son-in-law Luis Gonzalez.

She is survived by her four children: Susanne Martin (Luis Gonzalez), Saralee Martin (Thomas Hoover), Jeanette Martin (Keith Newswanger), James Timothy Martin (Dr. Sonja Stiller); 11 grandchildren: Benjamin Hoover (Laura Printz), Adam Newswanger, Richard Gonzalez (Marsha Matthews), Jonathan Hoover (Norelis de Jesus), Lisa Gonzalez, Sarah Newswanger (Cameron Nyguist), Hannah Newswanger (Edward Hoover), Rachel Newswanger (Marvin Ray Beiler), Gillian Martin (Sam Rocazella), Devynn Martin, Alison Martin; 12 great-grandchildren: Edison Hoover, Finlay Nyguist, Everett Hoover, Rhys Hoover, Wade Nyguist, Ezra Hoover, Elinor Nyguist, Han Hoover, Nolan Gonzalez, Avery Beiler, Naiara Hoover, Silas Gonzalez.

She is also survived by four stepchildren: Kristine Lowry Zimmermann, Craig Lowry, Linda Lowry, Maria Lowry (Jeff Harless); four step grandchildren: Leif Zimmermann (Jessica Heimer), Kala Zimmermann (Russell Keck), Conner Martin, Erin Martin. One step great grandchild: Hadley Keck.

Mary’s funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Groff-High Funeral Home, 145 W. Main St., New Holland. Interment in Zeltenreich Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Monday 10 to 11 a.m.
