Mary Sue Luek

Mary Sue Luek, 93, died in the skilled nursing section of Garden Spot Village on July 18, 2014. She was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, the eldest of three children of the late Mary Lampley Pierce and the late John Randolph Pierce. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Otto Luek, her sister, Elsie Reutenauer, her brother, John R. Pierce, and her brother-in-law, Fred Reutenauer. Mary Sue is survived by a daughter, Dr. Susan Luek, her sister-in-law, Patricia Pierce, and by five nieces and four nephews.

Mary Sue spent her childhood years in Springfield, SC and graduated from Springfield High School. She also graduated from Coker College, Hartsville, SC, where she was in honor societies for drama and history. Following her 1942 Coker graduation, she moved to Washington, DC where she worked with J. Edgar Hoover at the FBI. Shortly thereafter, she met and married Otto Luek.

In 1946, Mary Sue and Otto moved to New Holland where Otto became chief engineer for the (then) New Holland Machine Company. They also joined St. Stephen Reformed Church. For the remainder of their lives, Mary Sue and Otto attended St. Stephen, and they celebrated almost 61 years of marriage prior to Otto’s passing in 2005.

Sue’s outgoing nature made her the perfect New Holland Welcome Wagon hostess during the 1960s. She was also a member of the King’s Daughters and the Red Hat Club later in her life. Mary Sue was also a devoted volunteer of the St. Joseph Hospital and served terms as deacon and elder at St. Stephen Reformed Church. In addition, Mary Sue was an excellent bridge player who belonged to several clubs. She is deeply missed by all of us.

The family extends special thanks to the staff of Garden Spot Village. Mary Sue could not have received better care.

The celebration of life service will be held at St. Stephen Reformed Church, 249 East Main Street, New Holland, PA 17557, on Thursday, July 24 at 11 am with the Reverend Megan Malick officiating. Interment will be in the St. Stephen Cemetery. Viewing will be held at the church on Thursday from 10 – 11 am.
