Paul O. Shettel, Jr., 91, of 567 Springville Rd. New Holland, died Sunday, March 15 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bette J. (Warner) Shettel in 1997.
Born in Walkersville MD, he was the son of the late Rev. Paul O. and Laura Viola (Witmer) Shettel.
Paul received a B. S. degree from Lebanon Valley College and worked as a rehabilitation counselor with the Commonwealth of PA. He was also a member of the New Holland American Legion.
He was a member of Ranck’s United Methodist Church and had served in Mark Clark’s Infantry in Italy during World War II.
Paul was a man that enjoyed life to the fullest. He enjoyed boating, hiking, bird watching and being with his family. He continued to walk two miles a day until the time of his hospital stay.
Surviving are two children: Paul O. Shettel, III, Charlottesville, VA and Elizabeth “Betsy” married to Rev. Anthony Villareal, Schwenksville; three step-children: Linda “Lynn” married to Melvin McGinnis, Ocean City, MD, William W. married to Irene Dussinger, East Earl, and Deborah A. married to LeRoy Buzzard, Jr., New Holland; 13 grandchildren: Rachel Minnick, Allison Vogt, Stephanie Krohn, Nicholas Shettel, Rebecca Williams, LeRoy Buzzard III, Jessica Hildenbrand, Melvin McGinnis II, Shane McGinnis, Jebb Paul McGinnis, Justin McGinnis, Toni McCarty and Tami Thompson; and 21 great-grandchildren: Emily, Samuel, Jenna, Jack, Audrey, Ayden, Liam, Hailey, Hunter, Daeya, Isabelle, Jace, Julia, Tiffany, Brooke, Nathan Paul, Connor, Madison, Kailynn, Jack and Grace; and a great-great grandson, Isaiah.. Also a brother Rev. John E. married to Doris Lee Shettel, Rifle, CO and a sister Joyce married to Dr. Donald Snyder, San Francisco, CA.
He was preceded in death by a sister Viola Crites and 2 great-granddaughters: Emily and Allison McGinnis.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Ranck’s United Methodist Church, 700 Ranck Rd., New Holland, PA 17557. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.
