Phares Snyder Hurst

Phares Snyder Hurst, Jr., 65, of Leola, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at his residence. He was the loving husband of Martha Jane (Garman) Hurst, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage.


Born in West Earl Township, Phares was a son of Phares W. Hurst of Ephrata and the late Anna Mae (Snyder) Hurst.


He was a member of both Muddy Creek Mennonite Church and Allentown Mennonite Church. He worked as a Pioneer seed supplier for 30 years.


In addition to his wife and his father, Phares is survived by 6 children: Galen Hurst of Ephrata, Martina Moser, wife of Nathan, of Narvon, Glendon Hurst, husband of Keri (Detweiler), of Ephrata, Mary Kay Stoltzfus, wife of Wesley, of Morris, PA, Marilyn Horst, wife of Jay, of Ephrata, and Gary Hurst of Leola; 6 siblings: Marvin S. Hurst, husband of Ada (Shirk), of Savannah, NY, Arlene S. Martin, wife of Melvin, of Seneca Falls, NY, Earl S. Hurst, husband of Ruth Ann (Martin), of Ephrata, Edna Mae High, wife of Clair, of Lebanon, Raymond S. Hurst, husband of Lois (Good), of Denver, and Aaron Eugene Hurst, husband of Janice (Weaver), of Leola; 8 siblings-in-law: Leon W. Garman of Ephrata, Luke W. Garman, husband of Mary Ann (Weaver), of Denver, Lawrence W. Garman, husband of Anna Mary (Martin), of Quarryville, Anna W. Musser, wife of Leon, of Manheim, Landis W. Garman of Mt. Aetna, Lamar W. Garman, husband of Eileen (Seibel), of Denver, Esther Mae Burkholder, wife of Robert, of Millerstown, and Faye Irene Showalter, wife of the late Joel Showalter, of New Holland; and 18 grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his mother, a brother, Lester S. Hurst, and a sister-in-law, Erma W. Martin, wife of Mahlon Martin of Lititz.


Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 10 AM at Martindale Mennonite (Brick) Church, 171 Hurst Rd., Ephrata PA 17522 with Elvin Horst, Lester Burkholder, Jolan Martin, Wilmer Burkholder, and Richard Hoover officiating. Interment will follow at Muddy Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Fivepointville. Viewing will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Rd., Ephrata PA 17522. Arrangements by Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland.
