Richard C. Shertz

Richard C. “Dick” Shertz, 85, of Edgewood Drive, New Holland, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at South Eastern Pennsylvania Veterans’ Center, Spring City. He was preceded in death by his wife H. Phyllis “Sooty” (Brubaker) Shertz in 2010.


Born in Gap, he was the son of the late Chester and Jenni (Franciscus) Shertz.


Dick served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He had been a Post Commander of the Charles E. Ludwig Post #7362, Veterans of Foreign Wars, New Holland and was a member of the American Legion Conestoga Post 662, New Holland.


He was a former member of the Lonesome Pine Hunting Camp and had been a fox hunter.


An avid Phillies fan, he had also been a part of the Lancaster City County Baseball League.


He retired from the Service Parts Dept. at the former Sperry New Holland.


He was a member of the Zeltenreich Reformed Church, New Holland,.


He is survived by a son Timothy C. Shertz fiancé of Teresa McBee, New Holland and grandchildren, Kyle R. married to Angelina Shertz, New Holland and Jeni N. married to Charles Guy, Atlanta, GA, a great granddaughter Patricia, and a brother Kenneth Shertz, New Holland.


He was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Dyer, Margaret Kurtz, and Joan Bensinger, and a brother Dute Shertz


Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 23 at 2 p.m. at the Zeltenreich Reformed Church with the Rev. Stephen Arrick officiating. Interment will be in Zeltenreich Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 1 p.m. until time of service. Kindly omit flowers. If desired, memorials may be made to the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland is in charge of arrangements. Condolences for the family may be posted on our website, www.groffeckenroth.com.
