Robert H. Chain

Dr. Robert H. Chain, 97, of 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, died Friday, May 31, 2013 at Garden Spot Village. His wife, Marguerite “Peg” (Getz) Chain preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 2012.


He was a dentist for 46 years in Lancaster.


Dr. Chain was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. He served during World War II in the Army Dental Corp, recruited by the University of Pennsylvania, forming the 20th General Hospital located in Assam, India. During his Army service, he was stationed in Ashville, NC and Camp McCoy, WI, and Camp Clairbourne, LA. He retired as an Army Major.


He was a 50 year member of the American Legion, New Holland Post #662. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and past president of the National Sojourners Chapter #292, Lancaster.


He was a life member of the Lancaster Elks Club, #134, a member and past president of the Lancaster County Dental Society, a past president of the 5th District Dental Society, and a life member of the American Dental Association.


He was also a member of the Tucquan Club, a 50 year member of Lamberton Lodge #476; Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, the Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Temple, and Lancaster Shrine Club, Hamilton Park United Church of Christ.


For 13 years, he served as secretary of the former Lancaster Exchange Club and was a former member of the Conestoga Country Club.


Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Dr. Clarence and Charlotte (White) Chain.


Surviving is a sister Mary Hannum, Lancaster.


His sister Edna Herre preceded him in death.


A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Beck Funeral Home, 315 E. Main St., New Holland with Pastor Catherine M. Shiley officiating. Interment will be in Bridgeville Cemetery. Condolences may be posted on our website, www.beckfuneral.com.
