Stephen C. Hollowood, 53, entered the presence of his Saviour on October 9, 2026 at home, surrounded by family and friends. He had battled lifelong muscular dystrophy and his life evidenced a miracle of much courage and grace.
Born in Owatonna, Minnesota on June 16, 1973, Steve was the beloved son of Gail D. (Fagrelius) Hollowood and the late J. David Hollowood.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his siblings: Rachel (Joel) Miklas, Stevens; Sarah Barnard, Leola; and Tom (Amber) Hollowood, Albion, MI; and 12 nieces and nephews: Matthew (Julia), Autumn (Addison), Luke, Drew (Susanna), Leah (Jeremiah), Nathanael (Deanna), Micah, Anna, Mary, Averie (Joey), Paiton (Austin), and Maggie. He is also survived by caregivers past and present, including Kyle Robinson, Seema Peters, Eli Pius Elisha, Ruth Fisher, Sharon Stoltzfus, Douglas Bechtel, Isaac Raine, Kaitlyn McGarvey, Shante Zimmerman, and Verna King.
Steve was a man of cultured taste and a wide range of interests. Despite being confined to a wheelchair, he demonstrated a remarkable awareness of culture and world events. He was an avid reader, with particular interest in classic fiction, Biblical theology, political theory, and history. He enjoyed stimulating and edifying conversations with those he loved. Steve took time to understand the personalities and interests of friends and families, using his breadth of knowledge to give them specific recommendations for ways to expand their own talents and interests. His physical limitations were no match for his curiosity about the world and passion to see others excel. He had a palate for gourmet food and delighted in digging for new and old recipes for his nieces to try as he enthusiastically coached them from his wheelchair. Steve’s brilliant memory, his sense of humor, and his caring heart will not be forgotten. He will be sorely missed.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Groff-High-Eckenroth Funeral Home, New Holland. Burial will follow at Eby Cemetery. Condolences may be expressed at groffeckenroth.com.
