Stephen M. Kurtz

Stephen M. Kurtz, 97, died on June 14, 2016 at Garden Spot Village, New Holland, PA. He was born July 3, 1918 to Jacob E. and Rebecca (Mast) Kurtz. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mabel (Beiler) Kurtz.

He was a member of Conestoga Mennonite Church, Morgantown, PA. He graduated from Caernarvon High School as valedictorian of the Class of 1936. He was a farmer, worked for Eastern States Farmers Exchange, which later became Agway. After retirement he worked as a clerk at sales and in the office of Elton Horning, Auctioneer, Morgantown, PA.

He was treasurer for Conestoga Mennonite Church for 24 years and for Pine Grove Cemetery from 1952-2008 and worked as a caretaker to age 90. He served on the board of Tel Hai Retirement Community, mowed grass for Tel Hai Camp, and did volunteer work for Morgantown Reuzit Shoppe.

He enjoyed traveling, his computer, doing word search puzzles and reading.

He is survived by 1 daughter, Rodella (Luke) Weaver and 4 sons, Walter Kurtz, Leonard (Pat) Kurtz, James Kurtz and Kenneth (Chris) Kurtz, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 6 step-children, 14 step-grandchildren, and two sisters, Martha Stoltzfus and Linda Bush.

He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Vera (Stoltzfus) Kurtz, who passed away in November, 1989, a brother Omar Kurtz and 5 sisters: Sadie Kurtz, Anna Lois Umble, Ida Glick, Fannie Yoder and Susanna Umble, 3 step-children, 1 step son-in-law and 1 step daughter-in-law and 4 step-grandchildren.

His funeral will be held on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown. A viewing will be held at Garden Spot Village Chapel on Sunday from 6 – 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 9 – 10 a.m. Kindly omit flowers.
