Susan Elizabeth “Betty” Ewell, 86, of Main Street, East Earl, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Ephrata Manor. She was preceded in death by her husband Herman R. Ewell in 1991.
Born in Goodville, she was the daughter of the late Amos Earle and Esther D. (Weaver) Shirk. A 1944 graduate of New Holland High School, she started working at John S. Ewell Trucking as a bookkeeper. Later she worked with her husband in the early years of H. R. Ewell Trucking, Inc., a bulk food transportation company.
A lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Betty was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Lititz Springs #499, and past Worthy Matron of Samuel Fear Chapter 417, Honey Brook. She had been a member of the Blue Ball Lioness Club and the bowling league at Blue Ball Lanes. She enjoyed playing Bingo and was an avid Phillies’ fan.
She is survived by her children, Calvin E., married to Diane (Nolt) Ewell, East Earl, Dale S., married to Cindy (Wardenski) Ewell, Terre Hill, and Susan L., married to Rick Haverstick, Ephrata, and seven grandchildren, Scott, Steve, Mark and Kelly Ewell and Abby, Becky and Crystal Haverstick.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, PA 17557 with the Reverend Jacki Roderick officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. A viewing will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday from 6 – 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 - 11 a.m. An Eastern Star service will be at 7:45 p.m. Friday.
