William H. Knowles

William H. Knowles, III, a resident of the Welsh Mountain Home in New Holland, and son of the late William H. Jr. and Frances (Sharp) Knowles of Berwyn, PA. died, at the age of 69, on July 10, 2010 as the result of a heart attack. Bill was a graduate of The Episcopal Academy and a Merit Scholar. As an enlisted man, Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an air intelligence aide in North Carolina and then as a French interpreter/guard in Morocco. While in the Marines he received a Naval Enlisted Scientific Education Program scholarship and attended the University of Colorado. Bill loved the outdoors and was equal to challenges presented by skydiving, mountain climbing, wilderness hiking and bicycling. He worked as a commercial fisherman and tree surgeon and maintenance mechanic. In his latter years Bill enjoyed driving his Lancaster County neighbors on their errands. As a keen and compassionate observer of human nature and his natural surroundings, Bill spent his retirement at Welsh Mountain Home writing rhymes and humoring residents and staff. He is survived by his sisters: Barbara, Janie and Sidney. A memorial service will be held at Mountain Springs Mennonite Church, 567 Springville Road, New Holland, Friday at 11 am.
