William A. Sheaffer

William A. Sheaffer

William A. “Bill” Sheaffer, 91, of 67 N. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, died Saturday, Sept. 8, at Moravian Manor, Lititz. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy H. (Mentzer) Sheaffer.


Born in Lebanon, he was the son of the late William R. and Anna (Pasko) Sheaffer.


After graduating from West Chester State Teachers College, Bill served the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in the Field Artillery during World War II in the Philippines.


Following his Army service Bill taught English and Social Studies for two years in the Lebanon area before beginning a 35-year career with Sperry New Holland as Publications Editor. When he retired in 1984 he returned to teaching, working for nearly a decade as a substitute in the Garden Spot School District. Throughout his long working life and in retirement Bill loved words, language and good writing. He read widely and was a natural storyteller, always ready with an anecdote or bit of good humor.


He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: William K., married to Lynne Sheaffer, Ephrata, David F., married to Helen Sheaffer, Lititz, and Joanne Sheaffer, married to Jeff Steinbrink, Lancaster; two grandsons: Matthew and Christopher; and six great grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen K. Sheaffer, and a brother, Richard Sheaffer.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 150 Water St., New Holland, on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. Interment in St. Stephen U. C. C. Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Kindly omit flowers. Contributions in Bill Sheaffer’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
